Admissions and daily life

Admissions
Referrals come from acute hospitals, day hospitals for older people, community services or private application. The Person in Charge or a delegated nurse manager assesses the prospective resident at home, in hospital or remotely, and the person and family are invited to visit before deciding. Emergency admissions are assessed individually. Bring day and night clothing, toiletries, any personal equipment such as a wheelchair or hearing aid, a current prescription and a hospital discharge letter if there is one; the PPS number and medical card number are needed on admission. The home may decline an admission where the person needs more care than it can provide.
Visiting
Visiting is flexible; the most convenient times are 10am to 9pm daily, and other times can be arranged with the nurse on duty. Visitors are asked to avoid meal times (1pm to 2pm and 5pm to 6pm) and may not enter the dining room during meals. All visitors sign in and out at the main door. Prospective residents and families should book an appointment for a tour with the Person in Charge.
Funding
The Resident's Guide refers to residents funded under Fair Deal (the Nursing Homes Support Scheme), transitional care funding or privately, so the home takes Fair Deal residents. Fair Deal and transitional care residents pay a mandatory weekly additional social charge on top; the 2024 guide gives this figure as 45 euro in one section and 55 euro in another, so confirm the current amount with the home. Care fees are set out in the Contract of Care signed on admission and are billed monthly in advance, due on the 1st of each month.
Rooms and facilities
95 beds over two floors in four suites: 77 single en-suite rooms (average 14.2 sq m) and 9 twin en-suite rooms (average 22.9 sq m), all with TV points and wifi. Communal areas include two dining rooms, day rooms, a large sunroom, three activity rooms, a visitors' and family room, an oratory, a therapy room, an education room and a laundry. Outside there are two secure courtyard gardens and four acres of grounds with a small lake and fountain.
Medical and nursing cover
24-hour nursing with two registered nurses on duty. A local GP visits three times a week and is available on the other two days if needed, with Caredoc covering weekends. Physiotherapy runs Monday to Friday by appointment, chiropody as prescribed, and speech and language therapy, dietetics, audiology, dentist and optician are arranged through the GP or Person in Charge, some at a cost.
Activities and extras
An activities coordinator runs a programme seven days a week, including live music, arts and crafts, gentle exercise, gardening, reminiscence therapy, day trips and garden parties. Mass is held every Thursday at 11am. A hairdresser comes weekly and a beautician monthly, both at an extra charge. Laundry is done in-house free of charge.

Practical questions

How do I arrange a visit or tour?
Phone 053 915 9677, or use the online booking links on the home's page to book a tour, a Microsoft Teams call or a call back. The Person in Charge, Claire Whiting, gives tours and answers questions.
Can visitors bring food or drink for a resident?
Visitors may not bring cooked food for residents, and are asked not to bring alcohol without first checking with the Director of Nursing because many residents take medication that reacts with alcohol.
What happens to the room if a resident goes into hospital?
Fees stay payable while the resident is in hospital if the family wants to keep the room. If they choose not to pay, all belongings must be removed and the home cannot guarantee a place will be free on discharge.
Is smoking allowed?
Not inside the building. There are designated outdoor smoking areas, and residents with cognitive impairment must keep cigarettes and lighters in the safe at the nurses' station and are supervised while smoking.
